How dental implants can replace missing teeth

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed in the jaw to support a crown, bridge or denture. It can replace one tooth or contribute to a plan for several missing teeth.

The assessment comes first

Implant planning considers gum health, available bone, the neighbouring teeth, the bite and general health. Smoking, some health conditions, certain medicines and uncontrolled gum disease may affect healing or change the recommended approach.

Examination and appropriate imaging help determine whether an implant is suitable and whether grafting or other preparation may be needed.

Placement, healing and the final tooth

After placement, the bone needs time to integrate with the implant. Once healing is satisfactory, a custom crown, bridge or denture can be connected. The number of visits and total treatment time vary significantly between patients.

Alternatives can include a conventional bridge, adhesive bridge, partial denture or leaving the space under monitoring. The best option depends on anatomy, priorities, maintenance and budget.

What affects implant cost?

The number of missing teeth, implant system, imaging, bone or gum procedures, temporary teeth and final restoration all affect the estimate. Ask for the complete plan rather than comparing only the price of the implant component.

Long-term success also depends on daily cleaning, tobacco avoidance where relevant and regular professional review.
